Log Cabin Uses

The great thing about a log cabin is its versatility. There are no limits to what you can use your garden log cabins for. Whether its for leisure or for work, your wooden garden building will become an all year round extension to your home in the comfort of your outdoor space.

Here are just a few of the things you can use your garden log cabin for:

Garden Office

Having a separate garden office space provides an optimal work/life balance when working from home. You may not want to have your work computer, files etc. cluttering a communal or private space in the house. As such, a garden Office maintains a solid work environment all year round without compromising home life.

Hobby Space

Creating a dedicated workspace for your hobbies using a log cabin is the ideal way if you’re realising you’re running out of space in your home. Create your hobby room to how you would need it, personalise it with colour and storage solutions to keep your collection organised.

Garden Gym

As many people can agree, going to the gym can be an intimidating experience. And with the rising cost of memberships more are opting to keep fit with in their garden gym. With the option of a 26mm floor available on all cabins, house your gym equipment with confidence of a sturdy foundation and floor made out from treated softwood.

Storage Space

Use our garden log cabin shed to give you extra space to keep your garden area neat and tidy. Whether it's to build a dedicated space to keep your garden equipment safe, or a place to store the tools of a DIY enthusiast. Our garden shed range will be able to help any storage needs.

Extra Living Space

An eco-friendly alternative for your home and living space or for a remote holiday home - Please note that planning permission and/or building regulations approval will be required for these cabins, especially for residential use/using as extra living space.

Types of Log Cabins

Traditional Style Log Cabins

Our range of traditional style log cabins, feature more classic scandinavian designs. If you're looking to maintain a vintage look at your property and outdoor space, then a traditional design is what you might be after. Perfect if you're looking for a log cabin summer house.

Modern Style Log Cabins

Our garden log cabins also can be contemporary and modern in their design. In the UK with our height planning regulations they can also be very versatile. We offer a lot of different styles of contemporary log cabins in various combinations including canopies to enjoy outside dining and entertaining all year around.

Corner Log Cabins

Transform your empty garden space with a corner log cabin. It will give you the extra space you need to expand your living space. Gain that additional year round space you want without overcrowding your garden. Corner cabins tuck away so well in any garden corner nestled under some greenery.

Benefits of a Garden Log Cabin

Owning a log cabin comes with many benefits to your overall home. The potential for storage space lends itself well if you are in the need of a bit more free room in your house. Alternatively, your cabin can act as a spare room for your home, whether that be a hobby room, studio, or a garden room. Insulated log cabins can even work as an extra bedroom.

Our cabin make for a great space to relax in any UK Garden. Not only that, but their presence really stands out and completes the look of plenty of gardenscapes, which you can decorate to really make your own. In the long-term, owning a log cabin can improve the overall property value of your home.

Construction and materials of a log cabin

Building Process of DIY Log Cabins

All our summerhouses/garden buildings, are designed for self-assembly, including all the fixings. With just a few tools, you can build your summerhouse at any DIY level. The interlocking logs fit easily into one another, and our windows all come pre-assembled. You don’t have to fix them together, you just simply need to slot them in to place.

All log cabin kits are included with pictorial instructions, alongside our expert advice blogs. These pages will cover all areas of your installation. If you get stuck along the way our excellent support infrastructure will be ready to provide assistance.

Delivery of your log cabin

Our log cabins come in prepalletise kits and will arrive via an articulated vehicle with a demountable, self powered forklift to move the packages. Delivery will be curbside which usually means a driveway or a side path to your garden, you don’t have to be there for delivery. Please contact us if there are any limitations regarding size of your unloading area and access.

Once your delivery has been made, please check your package to ensure all items have arrived securely and without damage.

Bases and foundations construction

One of the most important parts of the build installation is a the base. To ensure they have the long life span as intended a flat and level base is required for any building. A base can be pretty much made out of anything: concrete, timber, paving stones. But, any base provided for any log cabin has to follow this criteria:

  • Consideration should be given to the majority of the weight being placed on the perimeter of the cabin.

  • Consideration should be given to the weight of the cabin, a 19mm is obviously considerably different to a 70mm.

  • It should be 100% level in every direction.

  • It should be square and true.

  • It should ideally be made to be just over the footprint size of the cabin.

For more details, please read Base Requirements for Log Cabins.

Slow Grown Spruce

The tongue and groove timber for our log cabins in made using exclusively slow grown spruce. This is a naturally strong and reliable white wood and a perfect solution for garden construction. Unlike pine wood, spruce wood is more dense absorbs less water in cold, wet weather, allowing our log cabins to withstand winter months better.

Log Cabin Roofing Materials

Depending on your roof type, your log cabin can have either IKO Roof Shingles or EPDM Roofing Felt. Shingles are best for apex and traditional style roofs, looking more house-like. On the other hand, Roofing Felt is made for flat roof cabins for easy, hassle-free application.

Maintenance of your log cabin

Preservation

A well-maintained garden building can be the perfect retreat for relaxation and entertainment. Our exterior timber treatments are designed to protect your outdoor space from the elements, preventing damage and extending its lifespan.

What to look out for with your log cabin

Expansion and Contraction: An all too common problem due to the natural properties of timber. Expansion and Contraction happens more frequently in the Summer with the warmer temperatures, as well as the common British rain.

Window and Door Warping: Likewise, windows and doors in your cabin can warp and expand in the heat, causing friction and difficulty opening and closing.

Humidity & Ventilation: With warmer weather comes more humidity to the insides of your cabin. Ensure proper ventilation is maintained to reduce warping on the inner walls, such as open windows or a Log Cabin Air Vent. This also prevents the build up of mold inside your garden building and furniture.

Lots of Insects: Bugs, Insects and other small pests are more common in hotter weather, make sure to keep them out of your cabin. Also ensure any food and drink spillages are cleared up so not to attract ants and flies.

Uses of a log cabin per wall thickness

19mm Thick Logs: This is a shed, ideal for storage and sturdier than traditional panel construction.

19mm-Log

28mm Thick logs: These are a great all rounder and lend themselves to a perfect summer house for occasional use. However, with modifications they can be perfect for all year around use. Generally though, we would recommend you opt for a thicker log for more thermal capacity for all year around use.

28mm-log

34mm - 45mm Thick Logs : More appropriate for annual usage. This range is a good balance between heat costs and budget costs of the actual log cabin. Regardless, you will need to add insulation to the roof along with the floor for optimal year-round use. See all of our 40mm Log Cabins and 45mm Log Cabins

34mm-log-thick-cabins40mm-logs-for-cabins

58mm thick logs - A very strong and sturdy building with high thermal capacity. This is the thickness if you are looking for reliable annual usage without being too large. Floor and roof insulation will be needed.

45mm-log58mm-log

70mm thick logs - This is the best size for full time accommodation. This is a serious cabin for housing purposes, but at this level you may encounter problems with building regulations and planning permission. Please contact us for our advice. Anything above the Edelweiss Log Cabin may cause you problems with planning and regulations.

Log Cabin Interiors

Furniture

Discover the natural charm and durability with our stylish range of garden furniture. From a simple garden bench and sun lounger to picnic table, even full table and chair sets in a range of styles, you are sure to find a comfortable seating space for your garden. Or complete with your own furnishings to create your log cabin interior.

Decor

Comfy and Soft Furnishing: A combination of comfortable seating options and cuddly additions, you’ll never want to leave your Log Cabin even on the coldest of days. Along with suitably sized Garden Furniture or a sofa of your choice, complete the comfy elements with plush cushions, throws and blankets to your seating area.

Warm Lighting Fixtures: Whilst many of our Cabins let in plenty of natural light thanks to their doors and windows, additional fixtures with a warm light source amplifies the comfy interior, making your space more like and outdoor living room.

Natural Elements: Not only does a Log Cabin’s structure and proximity in your garden draw you closer to nature, but it’s also a haven for natural interior options. Greenery is the biggest player. Make sure to add plenty of suitable potted plants to fill out spare space in your cabin interior.

Textured Decor: No matter how full, monotonous textures can leave your Log Cabin space looking empty and unflattering. Mixing it up with textured decor such as rugs, wall art and trinkets breaks the interior sculpt of your cabin, adding intricacy.

Personal Touches: Finally, and most importantly, make it your own. Bring familiarity into your new cosy space to make it more relaxing and include an item or two from your house to really complete the look.
