Types of timber

We offer a variety of different timber types on this page in a selection of lengths. This is because timber species have varying properties and purposes, making them suitable for different projects. Below are some of the popular types of wood timber available and what makes them unique.

Pressure Treated Timber

A common timber in our Log Cabins, pressure treated timber, also referred to as 'tanalised timber' is a solid base when doing any outdoor garden project. Treated timber and planed timber is the most versatile and easy to use.

For example, our basic log cabin foundation beams are constructed with this timber type to reduce water contact and prevent rot.

Hardwoods

Hardwoods, derived from deciduous trees like oak, maple, and cherry, is a wood boasting great durability, making them ideal for projects requiring strength and longevity. Harder woods are favoured for flooring installations and carpentry due to their ability to withstand heavy usage wear and tear.

In garden projects, our range of hardwoods excel in constructing raised beds, pergolas, and outdoor furniture. They can endure exposure to the elements without succumbing to rot or decay as quickly as softwoods.

Larch

Renowned for its durability and resistance to decay, larch timber boasts a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, making it an ideal choice for outdoor applications such as decking, fencing, and cladding.

Its natural resistance to insect attacks and rot further enhances its suitability for exterior projects, ensuring its longevity.

Douglas

Douglas fir timber is exceptionally strong, stable, and versatile. With a straight grain and fine texture, it's prized for its natural beauty in woodworking. This timber boasts impressive durability, resisting decay and insect damage, making it an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor applications. Its strength-to-weight ratio makes it ideal for structural purposes like beams and framing.

Douglas is also relatively easy to work with, allowing for precise cuts. We use it primarily for our DIY Douglas Timber Building range.

Softwood timber logs

Alternatively, softwood timber, sourced from evergreen trees such as pine and spruce, offer versatility and affordability, making them popular choices for simpler DIY projects like shelving, framing, and decking. Softer wood remain valuable options for budget-conscious DIYers and garden enthusiasts seeking practical solutions without compromising on quality.

Ultimately, the choice between hardwoods and softwoods depends on the specific requirements of the project, balancing factors like durability, aesthetics, and budget.

Pine

Discover the timeless charm of Middle European Pine. Renowned for its warm hues and graceful texture, Middle European pine timber blends seamlessly into any garden landscape. Additionally, pine's affordability and abundance make it a popular option for construction purposes, including framing, flooring, and paneling.

Northern Swedish Spruce

Similar to Pine, our Northern Swedish Spruce timber stands as a testament to nature's perfection with its amazing quality. It's relatively lightweight nature coupled with moderate strength renders it suitable for a range of structural applications, including framing, sheathing, and paneling.

Spruce timber also exhibits excellent dimensional stability, making it less prone to warping and shrinking over time. While not as rot-resistant as some hardwoods, proper treatment can enhance its durability and reduce its moisture intake.

Timber cladding

Timber cladding is a versatile building material renowned for its natural beauty and durability. Derived from various wood species, it offers insulation, weather resistance, and aesthetic appeal.

Timber uses

Timber as a whole is a very versatile material that, lending itself to a wide selection of different uses in DIY and Home & Garden renovations. Below are just a few of those uses:
