Log cabin vs shed: What’s the difference?

When you’re researching a garden building, you might be wondering whether a log cabin or a shed is the better option.

At first glance, they might appear to be similar but they’re designed for very different purposes. A shed is designed for storage whereas a log cabin is designed as a usable living space that can function as a home office, gym, hobby room or private garden retreat.

A key question we’re often asked is:

“What’s the difference between a log cabin and a shed?”

In this blog, we’ll explain the key differences between log cabins and sheds, compare their features and help you decide which option is best for your garden.

Quick answer: Log cabin vs shed

A log cabin is a substantial garden building made from interlocking timber logs and designed for regular use as a living or working space.

A shed is usually a simpler structure designed primarily for storing tools, garden equipment and outdoor items.

Log cabins are typically larger, more durable, better insulated and more versatile than sheds, but they also cost more.

What is a log cabin?

A log cabin is a timber garden building constructed from interlocking logs made from Scandinavian sprue. These logs create thick, solid walls that offer natural insulation.

Our customers use log cabins for a variety of purposes including:

  • Garden offices

  • Home gyms

  • Hobby rooms

  • Garden bars

  • Guest accommodation

  • Relaxation spaces

Due to their solid timber construction and the nature of the materials used to build them, log cabins provide better thermal performance and can often be used throughout the year comfortably.

What is a shed?

A shed is a practical garden building designed for storage. Most sheds are used to store tools and equipment such as:

  • Lawn mowers

  • Garden tools

  • Bicycles

  • Outdoor furniture

  • DIY equipment

Sheds are usually made from shiplap cladding or thinner timber wall logs which makes them quicker and less expensive to manufacture. While you might be able to adapt a larger shed into a hobby room or workshop, they’re not designed to be used as living spaces. They certainly won’t offer the same comfort as a log cabin in the winter!

Key differences between log cabins and sheds

Let’s have a look at the key differences between log cabins and sheds to help you decide which is best for your garden and needs.

Construction

One of the biggest differences between a log cabin and a shed is their construction.

Log cabins are made from interlocking timber logs which slot together to provide a solid, long-lasting building that’s comfortable for use throughout the year (depending on the thickness of the logs).

This construction gives log cabins better structural strength, better insulation and a longer lifespan than garden sheds.

Log cabins are usually available in thicknesses ranging from 40mm – 70mm. The thickness you choose will depend on how you want to use your log cabin. Read our log cabin thickness guide for more information.

Sheds tend to be made from timber shiplap cladding which makes them more lightweight and not as well thermally insulated as a log cabin. This makes them less durable and not suitable for year-round use as a hobby room or relaxation space.

Which is better insulated?

A log cabin is significantly better insulated than a standard shed due to the thickness of the walls which helps to regulate the temperature throughout the year. Many log cabin owners add floor and roof insulation to improve comfort and create a garden room they can enjoy, even in the colder months of the year.

Most sheds have thin walls and are constructed from 19mm timber so they’re not designed for regular use in the colder months.

If you want a building you can use as a hobby room, home office or garden room throughout the year, a log cabin is the best choice.

Which lasts longer?

With proper treatment and maintenance, a high-quality log cabin can provide enjoyment for decades. Log cabins are designed to be weather resistant and are made from materials that are durable to give you a building you can enjoy for years to come.

Although a well-maintained shed can last for many years, it’s usually a shorter-term solution when compared to a log cabin.

Which costs more?

A shed is usually the cheaper option because the construction is simpler and less timber is used in their construction.

Log cabins carry a higher price tag due to their stronger construction, insulation and versatility.

While the upfront cost of a log cabin is higher than a shed, it offers a much more usable space and long-term enjoyment.

Can I use a shed as a log cabin?

It is possible to convert a shed into a workshop or hobby space, but will lack the structure of a log cabin. A shed will require upgrades such as insulation, electrical installation and additional weatherproofing if you want to use it as a year-round building.

If you want to create a garden office, gym or relaxation space, a purpose-built log cabin is the better option.

Should I buy a log cabin or a shed?

We recommend choosing a shed for the following purposes:

  • You need basic garden storage

  • You have a limited budget

  • You only need space for tools and equipment

Choose a log cabin if:

  • You want to create a garden office

  • You need a hobby room or gym

  • You want to use the building throughout the year

  • You’re looking for a long-term investment
