How to install the canopy for your log cabin or summerhouse
Not all log cabins and summerhouses have a canopy section but some models feature an enclosed indoor area with a canopy or veranda. The installation for these models is slightly different to a regular log cabin or summerhouse with four walls.
A log cabin with a canopy provides the perfect outdoor space that allows you to make more use of your garden, whatever the weather or season. It’s perfect for adding outdoor seating or providing shelter from changing weather conditions so you can continue to enjoy being outside, despite the weather.
In this blog, we’ll explain how to install the canopy on your log cabin or summerhouse and share practical tips to help your installation run smoothly.
Installing the canopy on your garden building
In this guide, we’ll be adding the canopy section to our Jannie log cabin which features a covered canopy, perfect for a range of uses. However, these steps will apply for any of our garden buildings with a canopy section.
Step 1: Prepare the corner post for the canopy
For any of our garden buildings that feature a canopy, we send a post that supports the corner of the canopy where there are no walls.
The post will arrive oversized to allow for variations in base heights which means you’ll need to cut it to size for your log cabin or summerhouse and drill the hole required for the metal anchor that secures it in place.
To do this, mark the correct location by using a straight edge to draw diagonal lines across the post to find the centre point.
You will need to drill a hole big enough for the supplied bolt to fit inside the post.

Step 2: Fitting the canopy post
While building your log cabin or summerhouse, you will need to use a temporary brace to support the building and keep everything in place until you’re ready to add the canopy and post.
All you need to do is slide the canopy post into position and make adjustments to the metal anchor to ensure the roof is level, you can then slide the temporary brace out of the way.
We recommend using a spirit level on the underside of the overhanging wall log to check the level, allowing you to adjust the post accordingly and ensure the roof is level.

Step 3: Install the canopy triangle
With the door frame and canopy installed, you can install the canopy triangle section that sits above it.
When installing the canopy triangle, ensure the cladding faces down towards the ground and the frame faces up. Position the triangle above the door and interlock the corners into the voids above the frame.
Once you have the canopy triangle loosely in position, fit the final top log that sits above the cabin and canopy.
The finishing touches to your log cabin or summerhouse
The canopy is one of the last parts of your log cabin or summerhouse installation. Aside from the visual appeal of a garden building with a canopy, it can also be a practical addition that provides shelter and gives you a garden building that you can use throughout the year.
Installing the canopy correctly and ensuring its level and aligned will help you to create a building that not only looks great, but performs well throughout its lifetime.
