Installing the door frame in your log cabin or summerhouse correctly is an important part of the build as it can directly affect how well the doors open, close and perform over time.

Timber garden buildings are designed to allow for the expansion and contraction of the material as it adjusts to changes in environmental temperature and moisture. As a result, you’ll need to install your door frame to allow for this movement and to prevent problems with the functioning of your doors in the future.

In the latest blog in our log cabin and summerhouse installation series, we’ll cover how to assemble and install a standard log cabin door frame and how to attach it to your log cabin.

Why is it so important to install the door frame correctly?

The door frame is a key part of your log cabin. If it’s not installed correctly, you might experience problems such as the doors catching or not closing properly, gaps forming around the frame and increased stress on hinges and fixings. All of these problems can affect the functioning of your building over the long term.

Step one: Identify the components for your door frame

Before you start assembling the door frame, you’ll need to find the parts of the door frame in your log cabin or summerhouse kit.

The frame includes:

  • A threshold which forms the bottom of the door frame

  • A header which forms the top of the door frame

  • Two uprights which are the vertical parts of the frame

Step two: Assemble the door frame

Before constructing the frame, remove the screws already provided. We also include wooden blocks within the U-channel of the wood for protection during delivery so these will need to be removed.

Start with the threshold and connect the two uprights. You can then add the header at the top of the frame. When connecting the header to the uprights, use a scrap piece of wood to encourage the rebates together, as the fit can be quite snug.

Use the screws provided to secure all the parts together.

Step three: Install the door frame in your log cabin or summerhouse

The door frame has U-shaped channels on either side which allow the wall logs to slot into place around it. If needed, you can loosen the screws holding the fascia in place to widen the channel and make it easier to slot into the wall logs.

Make sure to carefully fit the door frame. Forcing the frame into place can cause misalignment or damage to the log cabin or frame.

Step four: Check alignment

Once the door frame is in place, check the frame is level vertically and horizontally and double check that the corners of your log cabin are still square before you continue building.

Why proper door frame installation is essential

Installing your log cabin door frame is a key stage that will determine how well your log cabin performs over time. Correctly assembling and installing the door frame ensures the doors operate properly, prevents unnecessary stress on hinges and fixings and allows the timber to settle naturally without causing any issues that could impact the longevity of your building.

Taking the time to correctly install the door frame helps to prevent issues such as sticking doors, gaps forming or misalignment.
