Shepherd Huts and Gypsy Caravans

Traditionally, a Shepherd’s Hut was a small structure placed on four small wheels, allowing Shepherd’s to keep an eye on their flock during lambing season. It used to provide a kitchen, dining room, living room and bedroom in one small space. 

However, they are now used to provide Glamping accommodation either on campsites or holiday sites and even as additional accommodation in homeowner’s gardens. With either one or two rooms, they provide a great space to enjoy a weekend away, or even as a home office.

We’ve seen Shepherd’s Huts used for the following purposes: 

• Guest accommodation for glamping sites or holiday parks 

• Private guest accommodation 

• Art studio 

• Personal library 

• Home office

• Retail space

Yes, all of our Shepherd’s Huts can be insulated so you can use them all-year round. You’ll need to add 35mm-45mm Celotex (or similar) insulation in the walls and rockwool in the roof to create an insulated space.

Our Shepherd’s Huts are for static use only and cannot be moved on the wheel set. We don’t endorse, recommend or encourage moving our Shepherd’s Huts once you have installed them.

Yes, if you wanted to live in a Shepherd’s Hut, a kitchenette, bathroom, sleeping area, and living space could be added to provide all the comforts of a small home. Modern Shepherd’s Huts can also be equipped with essential amenities such as insulation, heating, plumbing, and electricity, making them suitable for year-round living.

Whether you need planning permission to build a Shepherd’s Hut depends on several factors, including local regulations and how you intend to use the hut. In the UK, if the Shepherd’s Hut is being used as a temporary structure, such as for occasional accommodation, and is located on your own private property, planning permission may not be required. 

However, if the hut is intended to be used as a permanent residence, or if it involves significant alterations to the land, you are likely to need planning permission.

Yes, you can add water and electrics to a Shepherd’s Hut to enhance its functionality and comfort. Installing a plumbing system allows you to have running water for a sink, shower, and toilet, either by connecting to your main water supply or using a separate water tank.

For electricity, the hut can be wired to include lights, outlets, and appliances, ensuring the work is done by a qualified electrician to meet safety standards. You can connect the hut to the main power grid, use a generator, or install solar panels for a more sustainable option.

If you want that traditional finish to your Shepherd's Hut, you may want to add the wheel and axle set. It is however just an aesthetic choice and is not required for the full construction of your hut.
