What is a sauna barrel? A complete guide

A sauna barrel is a wooden sauna that is shaped like a barrel or cask. Its iconic round design isn’t just for aesthetic purposes, it provides practical advantages too. With efficient heating, excellent circulation and a smaller footprint than other sauna buildings, sauna barrels have become a popular option as garden saunas.
In this guide, we’ll explain what makes the sauna barrel so special, how it compares to traditional sauna cabin designs and how to decide whether it’s the right choice for your outdoor wellness needs.

What is a sauna barrel?

A sauna barrel is a circular, barrel-like structure built entirely from untreated timber, usually spruce or Thermowood. The round barrel usually has a separate sauna area inside. Most models rest on their curved side on a frame, but some are built upright.
Why choose a barrel shape?
There are a number of advantages of a sauna barrel including:
Faster heating: The curved interior reduces the volume of air needing heat, typically 20% less than square cabins of comparable size. This means faster heat-up times and more efficient use of your sauna heater.
Better air circulation: Round interiors promote natural air movement and even heat distribution without cold spots.
Compact footprint: Sauna barrels fit comfortably in most gardens, with smaller models suitable for two people and larger ones accommodating parties.
Many sauna barrels come with built-in benches that are long enough for lying down comfortably, something that is not always possible in square saunas with staggered bench heights.
Sauna barrel vs sauna house: Which should you choose?
If you’re installing a sauna in your garden and intend to use it yourself, a sauna that heats up quickly is recommended. The smaller the space to be heated, the better. Choose a sauna barrel if you want efficient heating, compact use of space and a more traditional aesthetic.
If you’re installing the sauna and intend to use it frequently with guests, you’ll likely need a more powerful heater, so a sauna house is then a better option. Choose a sauna house if you need larger capacity, a changing or lounge area, or a more formal garden structure.

Sauna barrels are generally suitable for two people lying down and possibly three people sitting down. Sauna cabins are available in larger sizes and can fit more people.

Installation: Where and how to place your sauna barrel
Think about the following elements when installing your sauna barrel:
Foundation: Your sauna needs a flat, stable base. Options include concrete slab, ceramic tiles or a strong timber deck.
Weight: A typical sauna barrel weighs around 800-1200kg. If installing on decking, use timber joints at 40cm centres with 2.8cm thick planks.
Clearance: Leave enough space around your sauna barrel for ventilation and easy access to add features such as a wood fired stove or a veranda.
