A timber garage carport offers the perfect protection for your car, but it can offer far more in terms of functionality. Choosing the right product for your needs and installing it correctly can provide additional storage space for your home and a practical and aesthetically pleasing addition to your home or garden.

Our customer, Mr Garratt who lives in Barton on the Beans, Leicestershire, installed a Tuin timber carport with added storage, transforming an unused outdoor space into a sheltered, organised and attractive space.

Why choose a timber garage carport?

Mr Garratt already had a very large garage for storage of his car, caravan and garden equipment but his wife required a smaller, more practical shelter for her car.

After researching potential solutions online, Mr Garratt found our range of timber carports and garages, and discovered exactly what he was looking for at a price that suited their budget. They were particularly enticed by the additional storage space provided inside the cabin. They now use this space for additional fridge freezers which they find particularly handy at Christmastime, as well as other items that require storage and keeping their home clutter free.

Unlike temporary shelters, a timber structure offers a long-term, durable solution that blends naturally with the landscape around it.

Other uses of the carport

You might think that the use of a carport stops at just a safe, clean and convenient environment for storing a car. However, it can be used for a range of other purposes, making it a versatile addition to any space. It can be used as a hot tub shelter or outdoor dining area to provide you with a space that you can enjoy throughout the year.

Mr Garratt has also commented that he may use his carport as a cover for his BBQ when the weather calls for it, helped along with it’s useful internal storage space ready for when you need it.

The benefits of a timber carport with storage

One of the key benefits of choosing a wooden carport with added enclosed storage is the versatility it offers. In this customer’s case, the storage area is now used for:

  • Extra fridge freezers

  • Garden tools and equipment

  • Household overflow storage

  • Seasonal items

For many homeowners, having a combination of covered parking and storage space makes this type of building more valuable and useful than a simple carport. The benefits include:

  • Vehicle protection: A carport shelters your car from rain, snow, frost and UV exposure, helping to maintain paintwork and reduce maintenance.

  • Additional storage: The added internal storage space provides you with space to keep tools, garden equipment and household items stored neatly.

  • Increased property appeal: A well-built and maintained timber structure adds warmth and an attractive addition to your home or garden when compared to other alternatives.

  • Multi-functional: The carport can double as a BBQ shelter, outdoor dining area, hot tub shelter, workshop and more, providing a versatile solution.

The build

Mr Garratt commented on how easy and straightforward the ordering process from Tuin was. The delivery went as planned, with the lorry parking at the top of the road and using a forklift to carry the 7.7m load down the driveway. Communication was great with couriers providing a precise delivery date and time.

In preparation for the arrival of his building, Mr Garratt dug out an area large enough for the cabin and added a 150mm hardcore and 150mm concrete base as a solid foundation to his carport. He also range a channel for electrical cabling, ready for a consumer board, plug sockets and lighting.

Mr Garratt took on the build himself and was pleasantly surprised at how quickly and easily the build went. Mr Garratt and his helper constructed the whole cabin (except the roof boards, shingles and guttering, in a single day!

One slight issue Mr Garratt came across was that a few of the slots on the roof purlins were a bit tight. The customer quickly rectified this by cutting a blade width out of the groove. This is sometimes required as the timber will naturally expand and contract.

Treatment

Once the building was complete, Mr Garratt treated the timber. He added two coats of wood preserver and a coat of wood stain. This treatment is essential for protecting the wood over the long-term, preventing problems such as rotting, warping, splitting and cracking and protecting the 10-year guarantee provided on all Tuin’s timber garden buildings.

A practical and long-term addition

This timber garage carport installation shows how a well-planned timber structure can provide more than just somewhere to park a vehicle. The completed building now offers the customer covered parking, secure storage and a multi-functional space. With the proper installation and regular maintenance, this carport will offer the perfect solution for years to come.
